This poem is dedicated to all those who still think the First World War will be over by Christmas.

Historically Sensible
You knew for a fact, they’d never
allow a pair of mad eyes with a pistol
near the Emperor and his wife;
and when they did, knew
the war would be done
before the Christmas tree went up
in Chichester town square…

It has just been announced that the tens of thousands of Irish deaths in the fight to save gallant little Belgium from the marauding Hun will be commemorated in a ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance next April 18th.
At the ceremony President Michael D. Higgins will use what he describes as "a small bit of a shovel I keep out in the shed" to cave former Taoiseach John Bruton's head in. Mr Bruton's remains will then be left hanging on some specially commissioned old barbed wire for the crows to pick at, as they see fit. In a statement this morning President Higgins said: "That fecker Bruton has been getting on my tits for years. I'm really looking forward to this. I've decided to hold this event on my 74th birthday as a special present to myself."
